Volunteer

Looking for a meaningful experience and a way to reach out and help others?

Sholom Hospice offers special training for individuals interested in becoming hospice volunteers.

Trained volunteers provide a variety of services focused on companionship and support for the patient and respite for the caregiver.

As a volunteer, you will be an important part of an interdisciplinary team to provide support to a patient, respite and support for family members, bereavement support programs and fundraising. Hospice volunteers consistently report that helping the terminally ill through Hospice is not about dying but about living.

Hospice training topics include:

  • Philosophy of hospice
  • Personal death awareness
  • Physician’s perspective of delivering a terminal prognosis
  • Health care decision making
  • Palliative care-pain and symptom management
  • Physical signs of a dying patient
  • Grieving process
  • Jewish spiritual perspective, communication and the gift of presence
  • Nurturing spirituality
  • Funeral and memorial planning
  • Healthy boundaries-self Care
  • Volunteer opportunities
